Aglianico Irpinia DOP MARTIS
Aglianico is a red grape variety grown mainly in Campania, Basilicata, Apulia and Molise. The vine has been recently introduced in Australia, as it develops mainly sunny climates.
It is an ancient vine, native of Greece, and probably introduced in Italy around the VII-VI century BC. There are no certainties about the origins of the name, that could go back to the ancient city of Elea (Eleanico), on the Tyrrhenian coast of Lucania, or be simply a corruption of the word Hellenic. Historical and literary evidence on the presence of this variety are found in Horace, who sang the quality of his land (he was born in Venosa) and its excellent wine. The original name (Elleanico or Hellenic) became Aglianico during the Aragonese domination during the fifteenth century, because of the double use of the phonetically pronounced Spanish.
Vigour: medium-high.
Cultural needs: hilly terrain of volcanic origin, but it also adapts well to different types of terrain. Suffers from the high temperatures of summer and winter months is mild nos.
